Del Norte High boys’ basketball gets a balanced scoring effort to secure a senior night win over Eureka. Click to learn more about the Warriors’ victory.

Three juniors and a sophomore scored in double figures Friday in Del Norte High’s 78-70 boys’ basketball win over Eureka, but it was the lone Warrior senior that held everything together.

Playing in his final regular-season game in front of a home crowd at Charles Thunen Gymnasium, Kanyon Starkey pushed Del Norte to respond after a slow start, then helped it hold on when the Loggers rallied late on homecoming and senior night in Charles Thunen Gymnasium.

“He’s the glue guy,” said Del Norte Coach Cris Rice, who has known Starkey literally since he was born. “He will do the dirty work.”

Del Norte trailed early 12-2, only to come roaring back, taking a lead in the first quarter it would never give up. The Warriors owned a double-digit cushion throughout the second half, but Eureka refused to surrender and trailed by just six with time running out. Del Norte sank its free throws to secure the victory.

Sophomore Ty Blue set a new career-high Friday, scoring 22 points. Damian Escalara added 18, while Justin Cushman scored 12, Marcus Parras had 11, and Sawyer Fry finished with 10.

It was the third win over Eureka in four battles this season. The Warriors now sport a 3-4 Big Five Conference record, 16-9 overall.

A Del Norte win Friday night at Fortuna would most likely assure the Warriors a spot in the Dick Nickali/Humboldt-Del Norte League Championship Tournament next week.
