Del Norte High wrestling finishes second at the NCS Redwood Empire Dual Meet Championships after a one-point final. Click to read more about the Warriors’ run.

How close did Del Norte High come from winning its third consecutive North Coast Section Redwood Empire Dual Meet championship?

This close.

For the seventh consecutive season, the Warriors reached the final of the NCS event Saturday, but lost to Ukiah – the division’s other perennial power – 38-37.

“It could have gone either way,” said Del Norte Coach Clinton Schaad. "Unfortunately, we came up just short.”

In the opening round, Del Norte pounded Petaluma 76-6, then dismissed Casa Grande 57-21 in the semifinals before coming up the one point short in the championship.

“The boys wrestling really well,” Schaad said. “We almost had our third consecutive title.”

Del Norte and Ukiah have met in the championship match in six of the past seven seasons.

The Warriors have little time to mourn the second-place finish. Instead, Del Norte will prepare for Saturday’s Humboldt-Del Norte League Championships, which the Warriors have won every year since 2019. This year’s tournament will be held on the Cal-Poly Humboldt campus in Arcata.

From there, the top performers in each weight class will advance to the Redwood Empire Division Feb. 13-14, and then to the North Coast Section Championships 20-21.
