Two Warriors claim NCS titles as Del Norte High wrestling finishes fifth in a 107-team championship field. Click to find out more about the historic weekend.

The greatest era of Del Norte High wrestling continued this past weekend, with a pair of Warriors earning North Coast Section individual titlists.

Thunder Lewis captured the 126-pound title. Wyatt Lewis brought home the 157-pound crown at the NCS championships held Friday and Saturday at James Logan High in Union City.

As a team, the Warriors finished fifth in the 107-team event, an impressive performance for a squad that was hit hard by injuries and illnesses throughout the season. Unlike other sports, California prep wrestling is not broken down into divisions.

“Finishing in the top five, given the hurdles this team has been through this year, is incredible,” said Coach Clinton Schaad, who directed Del Norte to a third-place finish in 2025.

Both Thunder and Wyatt Lewis dominated their brackets. Thunder, a senior, won his title match 17-2, while senior Wyatt earned a 20-2 victory in his championship final.

Two other Warriors also placed at the event.

Davion Johnson captured fifth place at 190 pounds, while Remington Escobedo finished sixth at 150 pounds.

“The boys who made the trip were impressive,” Schaad said. “Yes, they were short-handed, but it did not slow them down a bit.”

Along with the fifth-place effort at the NCS championships, Del Norte finished second in the NCS Redwood Empire Dual Meet Tournament earlier this season and took home its eighth consecutive Humboldt-Del Norte League title.

Both Wyatt and Thunder will now compete at the California State Wrestling Championships, set for Thursday, Friday, and Saturday at Bakersfield.

Del Norte’s girls team also performed well at the NCS meet, with Karyle Dodson leading the way with a fourth-place effort at 140 pounds.

“The girls battled in every match and laid the foundation for next season,” Schaad said. “Overall, it was a great showing for both the boys and girls squads.”
