Del Norte High students donated the gift of life Tuesday, thanks to the Northern California Community Blood Bank and the Warrior Interact Club.

Both veteran donors and first timers lined up to give blood in the school’s small gym. Those who donate will get to wear a red cord as part of their graduation attire.

“Del Norte High is phenomenal,” said Sierra Carter, the donor recruiter for the blood bank. “Del Norte is right up there with one of the best blood drives of the year.”

The Northern California Blood Bank serves all five hospitals in Del Norte and Humboldt counties. That requires a minimum of 150 pints donated per week. That blood is used during emergencies, scheduled surgeries, and for chronic disease treatment.

“It makes me feel good to do it,” said senior Aliya Knight, who admits she was “a little scared” the first time, but now enjoys the feeling that she is helping others.

Sophomore Galilea Garnica just turned 16, so her first time donating was on Tuesday.

“I feel proud of myself, because I’m terrified of needles,” she said. “There are a lot of people in this world who do not have this opportunity. It makes me feel stronger.”

Carter says high school blood drives are critical not only to supply the current need, but also for the future.

“The older generation is aging out,” Carter said. “The next generation of blood donors is decreasing. It’s important that young adults be motivated, passionate and enthusiastic about donating regularly.”
